Comtech Xicom Technology, Inc. is a supplier of Satcom amplifiers. Xicom provides rugged, highly efficient and reliable Traveling Wave Tube Amplifiers (TWTA’s), Klystron Power Amplifiers (KPA’s), Solid State Power Amplifiers (SSPA’s, and Block Upconverters (BUC’s) for commercial and military broadcast and broadband applications around the world. Xicom operated as a stand-alone company when it was acquired by Radyne Corp. in 2005. Radyne itself was acquired by Comtech EFData in 2008. The company operates as Comtech Xicom Technology, Inc. a subsidiary of Comtech EFData, Inc.

Company History

Xicom Technology, Inc. was founded in 1991 by Ronald Jay Sterns and Walter Wood. Walt Wood was Senior VP of the Company since 2006 and was hired in October 2004 in anticipation of his predecessor’s retirement and served as Executive VP of Operations of Comtech Mobile Datacom Corp. until his promotion to President of Comtech Xicom Technology, Inc. He had been President of Xicom since its founding in 1991. Wood had more than 30 years experience in engineering design and management of microwave tubes and amplifiers. Prior to establishing Xicom Technology Wood held positions in microwave design and corporate management which include: General Manager of Varian Associates’ TWT Division, Vice President of Engineering and Pilot Production for TWT’s at Teledyne MEC, and Engineering Manager of the Helix TWT Division of Varian Associates. While at Varian and Teledyne, Wood’s primary area of work was in airborne ECM design and manufacturing. He designed many of the traveling wave tubes that are still used today in military programs. Wood retired in 2009.

Comtech Xicom Technology Europe, Ltd. was established in the year 1999 as a Private Limited Company with the name Boldgate, Limited. On March 8th 1999 the firm name was switched to Xicom Technology Europe, Ltd. From 1999 till 2002 Ronald Jay Sterns was with the company where he held the position of Engineer. Later on Sterns was promoted to Director Engineering when he resigned in 2009.


Keydates

1991: Xicom Technology, Inc. was established by Walter Wood and Ronald Jay Sterns.
1993: Xicom sold its 100th amplifier.
1996: The Company established the European Service Center.
1997: Xicom Technology, Inc. moved to 21,000sq. ft. facility. Also the ISO 9001 Registration was achieved and the 1,000th unit was sold.
1998: Xicom sold their first KPA. Later in 1998 Xicom established a Service Center in Brazil. Xicom sold their 2,000th unit sold.
1999: Xicom Technology, Inc. established a Private Limited Company Boldgate, Ltd. in the United Kingdom. Later on the name was changed into Xicom Technology Europe, Ltd.
2000: Xicom sold their first S-Band Amplifier and established a Service Center in India. The production plant is expanded into a new 48,000 sq. ft. facility. Xicom sold its 3,000th unit.
2001: Xicom Technology, Inc. introduced Enhanced User Interface for their KPA’s. Also this year Xicom offered complete line of Ka-band HPA’s and established a Service Center in China. The 4,000th unit is sold.
2002: Introduction of the 50W Ku-band SSPA and High Efficiency KPA (w/ MSDC). Also Xicom established a Service Center in Thailand and sold their 5,000th unit.
2003: Introduction of the 50W and 100W compact C-Band SSPA outdoor units as well as the 50W and 60W Ku-band rack mounted SSPA’s and a 25W, 50W, 100W and 200W C-band rack mounted SSPA’s. The company achieved the ISO 9001:2000 Certification and shipped its 6,000th unit.
2005: Radyne Corp. based in Phoenix AZ, USA acquired Xicom Technologies, Inc. on May 27th, 2005 in a 41 million USD cash deal. Xicom would be integrated into the Radyne Comstream division. The same year Xicom shipped its 8,000th unit.
2008: Comtech Telecommunications Corp. acquired Radyne Comstream with subsidiary Xicom Technology, Inc. The whole company would be operating as Comtech EF Data (CEFD) as a subsidiary of Comtech Telecommunications Corp. That same year Xicom also introduced the 100W Ku-Band Antenna Mount SSPA.
2009: Comtech Xicom Technology, Inc. introduced the 500W Ka-Band Amplifier. In this year Xicom shipped its 20,000th Amplifier. Founder Ron Jay Sterns stepped down as President and John Branscum was replacing Sterns. Also this year Xicom introduced their 1,250W Ku-Band Outdoor Amplifier.
2011: Comtech Xicom Technology, Inc, introduce the Touch Screen User Interface and various High Efficiency products were launched as well as the Compact X- and Ka-band BUC’s. Xicom celebrates its 20 year anniversary and the 25,000th unit is shipped.
2012: Comtech Xicom Technology, Inc. announced a new Service Center in New Zealand.
2013: Comtech Telecommunications Corp, received a 7.0 million USD order for military communications Amplifiers.
2014: Comtech Telecommunications Corp. received various multi-million USD contracts for delivery of HPA’s for Direct-To-Home applications and Ka-band SSPA’s for military applications.
2015: Comtech Xicom Technology, Inc. announced a breakthrough for new High Efficiency Superpower TWTA’s 2kW Ku- and 1.5kW DBS-band.
2019: The Company announces world’s first 650W Ka-Band HTS Gateway Uplink Power Amplifier
